RAF SIMONS FW14 COLLAGE

RAF SIMONS x STERLING RUBY FALL/WINTER 2014 COLLAGE

For an assignment in class, we had to take a look from the Menswear Paris Fashion Week and make a collage out of it representing 'pattern invention' and also the original designer's taste. I decided to do a look from the Raf Simons x Sterling Ruby show for this assignment.

Raf Simons teamed up with artist Sterling Ruby for this particular collection.

"This has been nine years in the making" Raf Simons added about the collaboration with Ruby.

"This is our child."

The point of my collage was to demonstrate my own sense of deconstruction and reconstruction. I began by cutting apart the image and 'reconstructing' it into a separate, but similar piece, then taking the original image, left, and keeping it on its own. I filled the negative space with cutouts from the details of the particular look and pasting them in a seemingly organized reconstructed fashion.

Across the collage and on the clothing themselves, the word 'FATHERS' is used. Sterling Ruby said that, "Father is a particularly loaded word, used here to imply "the indoctrination of the man."

"A Ruby painting or sculpture often has an unfinished feel, an urgent sense of something protean arrested in motion. Simons made his name with clothes that traded on that same mood: deconstruction/reconstruction." (source)

Overall, I am pretty happy with this collage, not only because it was my first time doing such work, but because I feel like it showcases my personal aesthetics and also keeping true to Simons and Ruby themselves.
